Pinsk, Belarus

Welcome to Pinsk, a historic city located in the Brest Region of Belarus. History:

Pinsk has a rich history that dates back to the 9th and 10th centuries when the town was majority Lithuanian. Over the years, Pinsk was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and became a royal city owned by Queen Bona. The city was also occupied by the army of General Halast and General Hołowina and was taken by Napoleons army in 1812. During World War II, Pinsk was occupied by Germany and most Jews were killed during the liquidation of the Pińsk Ghetto by the German Ordnungspolizei and the Byelorussian Auxiliary Police. After the war, Pinsk became part of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic and later became part of the Republic of Belarus after Belarusian independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Pinsk is home to several historic landmarks, including the Assumption Cathedral of the Monastery of the Greyfriars, the Jesuit collegium, and the Butrymowicz Palace. The Church of St. Charles Borromeo and St. Barbara Cathedral of the Monastery of the St. Bernard Order are also popular attractions. The black-domed Orthodox Cathedral of St. Theodore is a modern building that is worth visiting as well.

Pinsk has been home to several notable residents over the years, including Golda Meir, the fourth prime minister of Israel, and Chaim Weizmann, the first president of Israel. Other notable residents include Ryszard Kapuściński, a Polish writer and reporter, and Simon Kuznets, a Nobel laureate in economics.
