History:
Yuzhnoukrainsk, founded in 1976, is one of the youngest towns in Ukraine. The city has undergone significant changes in recent years due to administrative reforms. In 2020, it became part of Voznesensk Raion, following the reduction of raions in Mykolaiv Oblast. If it weren’t for the Russian-held Mykolaiv Military-Civilian Administration’s advances, Yuzhnoukrainsk would have been the de jure capital of the oblast.

Located south of the city, the Tashlyk Pumped-Storage Power Plant features a dam and hydroelectric power station. On the opposite shore, you’ll find the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant, also known as Yuzhnoukrainsk Nuclear Power Plant. With three VVER-1000 reactors and a net capacity of 2,850 megawatts, it is the country’s second-largest nuclear power plant. During the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the power plant narrowly escaped damage from Russian cruise missiles.
