In 2009, Başakşehir was declared a district seat, marking its evolution into the thriving urban center it is today.

Geography:
Başakşehir is located in the European portion (Rumeli) of Istanbul and is surrounded by other second-level districts of Istanbul such as Eyüp, Sultangazi, Esenler, Bağcılar, Küçükçekmece, Avcılar, Esenyurt, and Arnavutköy. The Sazlıdere Dam reservoir is located to the northwest of the district, while the Sea of Marmara lies to the south. The Motorway O.3, also known as the European route E80, starts at Mahmutbey in Başakşehir and runs through the district in a westward direction towards Edirne.

Climate:
Başakşehir has a relatively cool Mediterranean climate (Csa/Cs) according to both Köppen and Trewartha climate classifications, with cool winters and warm to hot summers. It falls under USDA hardiness zone 9a and AHS heat zone 4.
