Welcome to Metehara, a vibrant town located in the heart of Ethiopia. Nestled in the East Shewa Zone of the Oromia Region, this city is known for its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and welcoming locals. Whether you’re a history buff, nature enthusiast, or simply looking for a new adventure, Metehara has something for everyone.

History:
Metehara’s history is firmly rooted in its diverse population. Visitors to the area in the early 20th century often described it as the land between the Karrayyu Oromo, Afar, Somali Dir clans (Issa and Gadabuursi), and Amhara. The area saw a significant influx of Somali settlers from the Issa and Gadabuursi clans in the late 19th century, and their numbers continued to grow as more relatives and kinsmen settled permanently in the region. During the Italian invasion, a German named Neitzel was granted a concession to cultivate cotton and coffee, but it wasn’t until the arrival of the Dutch corporation Handelsvereeningung Amsterdam (HVA) in 1954 that the area began to see significant development.

Things to Do:
Metehara offers a wealth of activities and experiences for travelers. Nature lovers will want to explore the stunning Mount Fentale to the north and the nearby Awash National Park to the northeast. The park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including baboons, gazelles, and the rare endangered African wild dog. Visitors can also take a dip in the refreshing waters of Lake Basaka, located just south of town.

Culture:
One of the highlights of any trip to Metehara is experiencing the local culture. The town is home to a diverse mix of ethnic groups, including the Karrayyu Oromo, Afar, Somali Dir clans (Issa and Gadabuursi), and Amhara. Visitors can immerse themselves in the local way of life by visiting the Tuesday livestock market, where traders from all over the region come to buy and sell their wares. For a deeper understanding of the region’s history and culture, be sure to visit Metehara Mikael Bet church. This ancient church dates back to the 16th century and is a testament to the region’s rich religious heritage.

Demographics:
According to the Central Statistical Agency, Metehara had an estimated population of 21,348 in 2005, with roughly equal numbers of men and women. The town’s population has grown significantly in recent years, with the 1994 national census reporting a total population of just 11,934.
