Uliastai has a long and storied history as a center of caravan trade in Mongolia. The city was founded as a military garrison in 1733 and was the de facto capital of Outer Mongolia during this period. Traces of Manchu rule can still be seen in Uliastai, including the stone remnants of the governors fortress and torture devices used by the Manchu.

The Museum of Famous People is dedicated to former residents of Zavkhan aimag and features artifacts from the lives of Mongolian prime ministers, presidents, generals, and Buddhist saints.
