Welcome to Chulucanas, a town located in the Piura Region of Peru. Known for its beautiful pottery, Chulucanas is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. The town lies in the Piura Valley, just north of the confluence of the Charanal River with the Piura River. Chulucanas is the administrative seat for both Chulucanas District and Morropón Province. Originally dating from pre-Inca times, the town’s pottery is now exported all over the world, and is one of seven products that the Peruvian government supports through its Center for Technological Innovation (CITE). Designs are varied, but are predominated by black and white. There are several bigger companies but a lot of small manufactures are in Chulucanas itself and in the nearby village of Quatro Esquinas. A visit to the local pottery studios is a must, where you can watch the artisans create their beautiful pieces and even purchase some unique souvenirs to take home. Chulucanas is also home to a major festival, the Fiesta de Cristo Resucitado at Easter. The town comes alive during this time with colorful processions, music and dance performances, and traditional food stalls. Make sure to try the delicious local cuisine which includes dishes such as ceviche, lomo saltado, and arroz con pato. For those interested in giving back to the community, there is Victors Vision, a nonprofit organization which provides supplemental academic and personal support, guidance, and resources to bright, impoverished youth. If you’re looking for adventure, the surrounding area offers opportunities for hiking, bird-watching, and exploring the nearby ancient ruins. Don’t forget to pack sunscreen, as Chulucanas recorded a temperature of 39.8 °C (103.6 °F) in 2013, which is the joint highest temperature ever recorded in Peru along with the Lancones District. Come and discover the charm and warmth of Chulucanas, a town that is sure to leave a lasting impression on you.
