One of the most interesting things about Amadalavalasa is its name, which means ‘the town of castor oil’. During the times of Ashoka, this place was called Herandapalli, with ‘heranda’ meaning castor oil in Sanskrit. Ironically, there are no castor oil plants being grown or castor oil being produced in this place.

For history buffs, Amadalavalasa has plenty to offer. Evidence of early historic man and his activities have been recently discovered on the hills of Sangamayya Konda, in Amudalavalasa mandal. Sangamayya Konda is 3 km from Amudalavalasa and was a Buddhist site, known for the Jain vestiges and Buddhist monasteries excavated recently. A freelance archaeologist conducted recent explorations on the hills of Sangamayya Konda and found several pre-historic Dolmen, Menhir, Cave, Caverns and Cisterns. Danthapuri (Danthavarapukota) is another historical place near Amadalavalasa, with ancient Buddha stupas present in this village located between Amudalavalasa and Hiramandalam.

Aside from its rich history, Amadalavalasa is also home to a number of industries, including a large-scale sugar factory (presently not working), jute, and oil. The town also has a head post office and is classified as a 3rd grade municipality with 23 wards.

For those interested in education, the primary and secondary school education is imparted by government, aided and private schools, under the School Education Department of the state. The medium of instruction followed by different schools are English, Telugu.

Amadalavalasa may be a small town, but it has plenty to offer for those willing to explore. From its rich history to its bustling industries, there’s something for everyone in this charming Indian town.
