Avdiivka is one of the oldest settlements in Donetsk region, with evidence of nomadic people in the area dating back to at least the 9th to 13th centuries. The city was named after the first settler, Avdiivka. Today, the large Avdiivka Coke Plant is located in the city, providing local heating energy via natural gas. Despite its industrial roots, Avdiivka has a rich cultural history. The city suffered as a result of the Holodomor in 1932–1933, with 485 established victims. During the Russo-Ukrainian War, Avdiivka became a frontline city and frequently shelled. In 2017, the city was embroiled in a battle that left it without electricity and heating for several days. Despite the heavy fighting and destruction during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Avdiivka remains under Ukrainian control and is slowly rebuilding.
