Surajgarh was founded by Raja Surajmal Singh Ji Shekhawat, the first ruler and jagirdar of Surajgarh estate. Education is a significant focus in Surajgarh, with many educational institutions such as Tagore Children Academy (Tagore Public Senior Secondary School), Saraswati, P.B School, Govt. Girls School, St. Mann school, Surajgarh Academy, RKJK Barasiya P.G. College, Tagore Girls College, Keystone Engineering College, and Arya Nursing College. The Government College, which offers only BA courses, was opened in 2021 and is located in Surajgarh.
Surajgarh has a rich cultural heritage, and one of the town’s most well-known figures is Headmaster Ji, Rambilas Sharma. He devoted his life to the development of Surajgarh, and a book on his life and the town is titled ‘Headmaster Ji: The Man with the Literacy Mission.’ The Government of India, Postal Department honored his contribution to society and released a special cover in his memory during the first philately exhibition of Jhunjhunu in 2016. Headmaster Ji participated in the Bhoodan Movement in Surajgarh from 1958-60 with Vinoba Bhave, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, and others.
