Tcholliré is a town and commune located in the Northern Region of Cameroon. While it may not be a popular tourist destination, there are still plenty of things to see and do in this unique city. One of the most notable attractions is the Tcholliré Prison, which was once a feared political prison but has since been reformed into a normal prison. Today, it houses 200 inmates and has a capacity of 500 places. The prison only accommodates people who have been definitively sentenced and houses exclusively men. The city has a complex history, and the Civic Re-education Centre (CRC) of Tcholliré was the materialisation in practice of Ordinance n° 62/OF/18 of 12 March 1962 on the repression of subversion. This Ordinance had considerable effects on the whole of public and political life for three decades, between 1962 and 1990. However, since the advent of the return to a multi-party system and public liberties, the face of the Civic Re-education Centre of Tcholliré has changed. Its name has undergone a profound change. The prison of Tcholliré II has today definitively turned the dark pages that haunted its premises. In accordance with article 5 of decree n° 92-052 of 27 March 1992 on the prison regime in Cameroon, the Cholliré II remand prison could have been a production prison. The geographical context in which this prison is located ideally allows convicts to participate through their work in the national development effort. It is located in a rural area where agricultural or breeding activities can be carried out. Vast arable land is available to give a chance of rehabilitation to the inmates of this prison. Another interesting aspect of Tcholliré is its location in a rural area, surrounded by beautiful landscapes and offering a look into traditional Cameroon culture. Visitors can explore the local markets, where vendors sell a variety of goods including fresh produce and handmade crafts. The city is also known for its traditional dances and music, which can be enjoyed at local festivals and events. Tcholliré may not be on every traveler’s bucket list, but it is a unique and interesting destination for those looking to explore off the beaten path in Cameroon.
