History:
Lubin is located midway between two West Slavic Ślężanie tribes, the Dziadoszanie and the Trzebowianie. The town’s origins are unclear, but legend has it that the town was named after Luba, a young man who slayed a giant bear that had been terrorizing the inhabitants. Lubin was first mentioned in a papal bull dated circa 1155 as one of 13 Silesian castellanies. Lubin’s castle served as the residence of Piast duke Louis I the Fair and his descendants from 1348. Lubin became part of the Habsburg monarchy in 1526 and was eventually incorporated into Prussia in the 18th century. During World War II, the town suffered significant destruction, and the remaining German population was expelled after the war.
Geography:
Lubin is situated on the Zimnica river in the Lower Silesian historical region, about 71 kilometers (44 miles) northwest of Wrocław and 20 km (12 miles) north of Legnica. Lubin is one of the major industrial locations in Lower Silesia and is home to the KGHM Polska Miedź mining company, the third-largest Polish corporation.

Zagłębie Lubin is the city’s most celebrated sports team, playing men’s football in the Ekstraklasa (top division) as of season 2022–23, Polish Champions in seasons 1990-91 and 2006-07. Additionally, the city has a men’s handball team and a women’s handball team playing in the Polish Superliga (top division) as of season 2022–23. Cuprum Lubin is a men’s volleyball team playing in the PlusLiga (top division) as of season 2022–23.
Transportation:
Lubin has several major roads running through it, including Expressway S3 (highway), part of the European route E65, and National road 36. Lubin also has an international airport with a 1000m concrete/asphalt runway and a newly built train station offering connections to many locations across the country. The city currently has free public transportation within its limits, with the main busses running approximately every 20 minutes. Lubin also has the PKS station, which offers affordable coach-type buses to several other cities such as Wrocław and Legnica.
