Babol has a rich history that dates back to ancient times. The city was founded by the Safavids in the 16th century on the site of the ancient city of Mamatir. Babol was formerly called Barforushdeh and Barforush before being renamed by the founder of the Pahlavi dynasty to Babol, which means city with abundant water supply. Today, Babol is a vibrant city with a mix of ancient and modern architecture.
The city is located approximately 20 kilometers south of the Caspian Sea on the west bank of Babolrud River and receives abundant annual rainfall. Babol is famous for its orange groves and produces oranges, lemons, and tangerines. The city is also home to many important and intact forests and jungles, such as Shiadeh, in southeast Babol. Filband, a nearby village, is famous for its skies which are full of interconnected cumulus clouds, especially in springtime. Babol’s climate is classified as a humid subtropical climate.
