As a budget backpacker, I found my way through Shkodër without emptying my wallet, and I’m here to share my tips on how you can do the same!

First things first, getting to Shkodër is surprisingly easy and budget-friendly. If you’re traveling from Tirana, hop on a shared minibus (known as a “furgon”) from the central bus station. The journey takes about two hours and costs around 300 Albanian Lek (just a few bucks!). Plus, you’ll get to enjoy the scenic views of the countryside along the way, so don’t forget your camera!
Where to Stay: Budget-Friendly Accommodations
Once you arrive, you’ll want a cozy place to rest your head. Consider staying at one of the local hostels such as Shkodra Backpackers Hostel or Hotel Colosseo. Dorm rooms are typically around 1,000 Lek per night (about $10), and you can meet fellow travelers while enjoying a communal kitchen to whip up your own meals. Trust me, cooking your own meals helps save those precious Lek for activities!
Free and Cheap Things to Do
Shkodër is brimming with sights that won’t cost you a dime—or at least not much! Here are some of my favorite activities:
- Visit Rozafa Castle: For just 300 Lek, you can explore this ancient fortress that overlooks the city. The views are absolutely breathtaking! As I stood at the edge, I could see the shimmering Lake Shkodër and the meandering Buna River, which made the climb totally worth it.
- Stroll Through the Historical Center: Take a leisurely walk around the charming streets of the city center. Check out the beautiful architecture that reflects Shkodër’s rich history, and don’t miss the iconic Lead Mosque and the Marubi National Museum of Photography. The museum has a small entrance fee, but it’s worth every Lek!
- Explore the Lake: A day at Lake Shkodër costs nothing if you bring your own snacks and drinks. I spent an entire afternoon lounging by the lake, soaking up the sun and taking a dip in the refreshing water. If you’re feeling adventurous, rent a kayak for around 1,000 Lek!

When it comes to food, Shkodër offers a variety of tasty options that won’t break the bank. Head to a local eatery like Restaurant Tradita for traditional Albanian dishes. A hearty meal, including delicious grilled meats and fresh salads, will cost you around 600 Lek. Don’t miss out on trying some Byrek (savory pastries filled with cheese or spinach)—a local favorite that’s cheap and satisfying!
