On June 27, 1985, Sông Cầu District regained its independent status, separate from Đồng Xuân District. This marked a significant milestone for the town, and it was officially upgraded to town status on August 28, 2009.
Sông Cầu is divided into four wards (phường) and ten communes (xã), each with its own unique charm and attractions. The four wards are Xuân Yên, Xuân Phú, Xuân Thành, and Xuân Đài, while the ten communes include Xuân Thọ 1, Xuân Thọ 2, Xuân Lâm, Xuân Phương, Xuân Thịnh, Xuân Cảnh, Xuân Hoà, Xuân Bình, Xuân Lộc, and Xuân Hải.
With a population of 101,521 at the time of its establishment in 2009, Sông Cầu covers an area of 489.28 km². The town’s local government offices are situated in Xuân Phú Ward, making it a hub of administrative activities.
