== History ==
Hoogezand gets its name from a higher sanded (Hooge Sandt) place in the peatlands that were cut through when the Winschoterdiep channel was dug. It was in 1618 when the town was founded near this channel. Initially, Hoogezand was a center of peat briquette production. As the peat resources depleted, the town transformed, and factories for cardboard production and potato processing plants emerged. One of the notable industries in Hoogezand today is the shipbuilding industry. The shipyards here have a unique method of launching vessels sideways, which is uncommon for slipways. In 1821, Hoogezand absorbed the former municipality of Windeweer, and in 1949, it merged with Sappemeer to form one city. The current municipality of Hoogezand-Sappemeer has a population of around 34,438 citizens, with approximately 21,000 residing in Hoogezand. In 2018, it merged with Slochteren and Menterwolde to create the new municipality of Midden-Groningen.
