When he attempted to continue his journey, another storm forced him back to El Viejo, leading him to believe it was a sign from above. As a result, the image of the Virgin Mary found its permanent home in El Viejo, symbolizing divine intervention.
Each year on December 6th, the little statue undergoes a special ceremony called the lavado de la plata, where the silver that adorns it is washed before the congregants. This tradition showcases the devotion and reverence for the Virgin Mary that is deeply ingrained in the local culture.
