History:
Before the arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th century, Teresópolis was inhabited by indigenous Brazilians. The region was also occupied by runaway slaves who formed a quilombo. In 1821, English citizen George March established a farm there, which later became the most important settlement between the court in Rio de Janeiro and the state of Minas Gerais. The Brazilian imperial family was impressed by the natural beauty and climate of the region, and in 1855, the settlement became a village named Freguesia de Santo Antonio de Paquequer. The village continued to develop and attracted traders from Minas Gerais on their way to Rio de Janeiro. Finally, on July 6, 1891, the village was named Teresópolis, after Empress Teresa Cristina, wife of Emperor Pedro II.
Geography:
The city has a population of 163,746 within a land area of 770.6 km2 and is surrounded by forests and well-known summits or peaks, making it the national capital of mountaineering. The Serra dos Órgãos National Park, known for its Atlantic Forest vegetation, is partly within the city limits. The most famous peaks are Dedo de Deus (God’s Finger), Pedra do Sino, and Agulha do Diabo, among others. The municipality contains several protected areas, including the Três Picos State Park and Montanhas de Teresópolis Municipal Nature Park.
Climate:
Teresópolis features a subtropical highland climate, with relatively cold and dry winters and mild and wet summers. The annual average temperature is 16°C/60.8°F, making it one of the mildest climates in Brazil and an ideal location for the Brazilian Football Confederation’s training headquarters at Granja Comary.
