Welcome to Sampit, a city located in East Kotawaringin Regency, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Despite its sizeable population of 166,773 people according to Statistics Indonesia in 2019, Sampit is not an autonomous city and not an administrative division. The city has a rich history, having been part of the Sultanate of Banjar and the Dutch East Indies during colonial times. During World War II, it was occupied by the Imperial Japanese Navy, and the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence was made in the city. However, Sampit gained worldwide attention due to the inter-ethnic violent communal clashes between the Dayaks and the Madurese migrants in 2001. Today, Sampit is a medium-sized city with a total area of 751.45 square kilometers and 11 subdistricts from Baamang district, Seranau district, and Mentawa Baru Ketapang district. It has a tropical rainforest climate with heavy rainfall year-round, making river transportation an important part of the city’s life. Although there are some transportation challenges due to the roads’ condition, the city has H. Asan Airport, Dr. Murjani Sampit Regional Hospital, and several higher education institutions.
