History:
Baruipur has a rich history dating back to ancient times. Many janapadas grew up along the old Bhagirathi channel from ancient times till around the 16th century. The famous poet Bipradas Pipilai composed the Manasavijaya in 1495, which mentions several places in this region, including Baruipur. The village of Atisara, near Baruipur, was a halt for Chaitanyadeva, the famous saint, during his journey to Puri. The zamindar of Chhatrabhog, Rama Chandra Khan, helped him to continue his journey.

Geography:
Baruipur is located in the Ganges Delta region and has an average elevation of 9 meters (30 ft). The southern part of the subdivision is covered by the Baruipur-Jaynagar Plain, and there are 20 census towns in this area. Archaeological excavations at Dhosa and Tilpi, on the bank of the Piyali River, indicate the existence of human habitation around 2,000 years ago.

Baruipur has a tropical wet and dry climate (Aw) according to the Köppen-Geiger climate classification system.

Demographics:
According to the 2011 Census of India, Baruipur had a total population of 53,128. The literacy rate was 85.5%, with male literacy at 87.6% and female literacy at 83.4%. The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes population was 13,157 and 317, respectively.

Civic Administration:
The Baruipur Municipality covers an area of 9.50 km2 and was established in 1869. The municipality is divided into 17 wards and is controlled by the All India Trinamool Congress. Baruipur police station covers an area of 212.48 km2, and the Baruipur women police station has jurisdiction over parts of the Baruipur Municipality. The headquarters of the Baruipur CD block are located at PO Piyali Town, Phultala, Baruipur.

Transportation:
Baruipur is located on State Highway 1 and is connected to Kolkata and other nearby cities by road. The Baruipur Junction railway station is on the Sealdah–Namkhana line of the Kolkata Suburban Railway system, and more than 1.7 million commuters use the Kolkata Suburban Railway system daily.

Education:
Baruipur has several reputed educational institutions, including Al Ameen Memorial Minority College, Baruipur High School, Baruipur College, Baruipur Government Polytechnic, Gargi Memorial Institute of Technology, and Greater Kolkata College of Engineering and Management.

Healthcare:
The Baruipur Subdivisional Hospital is the major government medical facility in the Baruipur subdivision, with 250 beds.

Baruipur is the birthplace of several notable people, including Biman Banerjee, the Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, the famous Indian novelist, poet, and essayist, Subhankar Chattopadhyay, the Indian director, scriptwriter, and non-fiction show creator, and Madhumita Sarcar, the Indian actress.
