Welcome to Guiglo, a vibrant city located in western Ivory Coast. This sub-prefecture of and the seat of Guiglo Department, is also a commune and the seat of Cavally Region in Montagnes District. Guiglo is situated on the Nzo River, a tributary of the Sassandra River. The city had a population of 52,544 in the 2014 census, and in 2021, the population of the sub-prefecture of Guiglo was 171,454. Guiglo is a market center for the Guere, Yacouba, and Mossi people, with trade in rice, livestock, and cassava dominating. You can explore the local markets and indulge in the delicious local cuisine. The city is also a collecting depot, or entrepot, for coffee and timber that is taken to coastal ports for export. Visit the research station and the sawmill to learn about the city’s thriving timber industry. Guiglo is also home to the Guiglo Airport, providing easy access for tourists. However, the city is not without its turbulent history. In 2005, a United Nations base was invaded by 1,000 protesters, resulting in a clash that left 100 protesters and one UN peacekeeper dead.
