This charming town is situated at the foot of the Sár-hegy and Mátra mountains, and is known for its numerous food production plants, including milk production and sausage factories. Gyöngyös is also home to many vineyards on the slopes of the Sárhegy.
The town has a rich history and was home to a large Jewish community before World War II. Following the occupation of Hungary by the German army in March 1944, 1800 Jews were locked in a ghetto. Some were saved by Hungarian Righteous Among the Nations personnel but most of them were deported to Auschwitz where they were murdered.
Today, Gyöngyös is a popular tourist destination with many monuments and places of interest to visit. The Orczy mansion is home to the Mátra Museum, which showcases the history of the town and its surroundings. Saint Bartholomews Church is another popular attraction, with its Baroque architecture and stunning Treasury.
For sports lovers, Gyöngyös is home to the Energia SC Gyöngyös football club. The town has also produced several notable athletes, including professional triathlete Zsófia Kovács and former handball player József Éles.
In addition to its many attractions, Gyöngyös is also twinned with several sister cities, including Dobříš in the Czech Republic and Hévíz in Hungary.
