Pylaia, Greece

Welcome to Pylaia, a beautiful former municipality located in the Thessaloniki Prefecture of Greece. In 2011, Thessaloniki Prefecture became the regional unit of Thessaloniki, and Pylaia became a part of the new municipality of Pylaia-Chortiatis. Despite this change, Pylaia continues to thrive under its old boundaries as a municipal unit within Pylaia-Chortiatis. With a total area of 24.379 km2 and 4.5 km of coastline along the Thermaic Gulf, Pylaia is a relatively sparsely populated municipal unit within the Thessaloniki Urban Area, with a population of 34,625 according to the 2011 census.

History:
The history of Pylaia dates back to 319 BC, as the first reference to the city is found in the historian Thucydides under the name Strepsa. Later on, it was known as Kapoutzida, which comes from the Turkish word kapıcı (gatekeeper), referring to the guards watching over the city walls of Byzantine Thessaloniki. The current name, Pylaia, came into general use in 1927 and is derived from the word Pyle (πύλη), meaning gateway, referring to the Eastern Entrance of the city.
