Welcome to Baranagar, a bustling city located in the North 24 Parganas district of the Indian state of West Bengal. This city is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) and is the fifth most densely populated city proper in the world. Baranagar is a major industrial center for the manufacture of agricultural and industrial machinery, chemicals, castor oil, and matches. It is also home to numerous cotton-processing companies, offset & digital printing companies, and book publishers. But Baranagar is not just about industry. It is also a city with a rich history and culture. The word Baranagar derives from the Bengali term Barahanagore, meaning City of the Hogs. The Dutch had homes there in the seventeenth century. Streynsham Master who visited the area in 1676 spoke of the hog factory where about 3,000 hogs a year were slaughtered and salted for export. Later it became the center for the extensive jute trade, manufacturing gunny bags. Baranagar Municipality was established in 1869; it is one of the oldest municipalities in India.
