Masaurhi is located just 30 km from Patna, the capital of Bihar state, and is one of the 6 Sub-divisions in Patna district. As of the 2011 India census, Masaurhi has a population of 241,216, with males constituting 52.1% of the population and females 47.8%. The average literacy rate is 53.03%, lower than the national average of 74.04%, with male literacy at 61.5% and female literacy at 43.8%. In Masaurhi, 17% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Masaurhi is located at 25°21′N 85°02′E and is surrounded by three rivers: Dardha, Punpun, and Morhar. These rivers are dependent on rains and are mentioned in ancient books such as the Vayu and the Padma Puranas in connection with Gaya Mahatmya. The Punpun River is a big river that might have been called by this name because it was frequently in spate. The Puranas interpret the word Punahpuna in a spiritual sense, i.e., sins are removed again and again by offering oblations to the Pitras (forefathers) in the river.

Masaurhi experienced a sudden load of visitors coming to the village to see the solar eclipse of July 22, 2009, as it was one of the best locations within the path of totality to watch it.
