With a population of 62,000, it is the second-largest city in the region. The city’s name, Phitsanulok, means Vishnu’s heaven, and it has a rich history dating back over 600 years.
Phitsanulok was originally named Song Khwae, which means two rivers, as it used to situate between the Nan and Khwae Noi Rivers. The city was founded by King Srithampidok or King Thammaracha I of Sukhothai, who also constructed the Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat and cast famous Buddha images of Phra Buddha Chinnarat and Phra Buddha Chinnasri. Song Khwae became the royal seat of Sukhothai Kingdom in 1378 and was incorporated into the Ayutthaya Kingdom in 1448.
Phitsanulok is home to many historic sites, including the Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat, which houses the famous Phra Buddha Chinnarat, one of the most revered Buddha images in Thailand. The city is also known for its traditional Thai architecture, with many temples and buildings featuring intricate carvings and beautiful murals.

The city has many waterfalls, forests, and caves, including the Kaeng Sopha waterfall, Phu Hin Rong Kla, and Phu Soi Dow.
