The city was founded in 1562 under the name of Villa de Arnedo and was later part of the Inca Empire. The Chancay culture was a pre-Columbian archaeological culture that has left its mark on the city. Today, Chancay is a popular tourist resort for nearby Lima, with its main attraction being El Castillo, a faux castle that was recently repaired but constructed in the nineteenth century.
