Visnagar was founded as an outpost of the kingdom of King Visaldeo, and it faced many wars between Visaldeo, Babis, Ider dynasty, and Gayakwads. With the change of rulers, Visnagar underwent many changes and grew with a fort wall with six gates. Under Gayakwad rule, Visnagar became the first town in North Gujarat to have an underground water supply and sewerage system. Visnagar produced many freedom fighters during the time of British rule.
