Formerly known as Lintong County, this district was established in 1997 and is now one of 11 urban districts of the prefecture-level city of Xian, the capital of Shaanxi Province. Lintong District is home to some of China’s most famous landmarks, including the Terracotta Army and the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor.
The Terracotta Army, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was discovered in March 1974 near Lintong District. This incredible archaeological find consists of thousands of life-sized terracotta figures of warriors and horses, each with unique facial features and clothing. Another must-see attraction in Lintong District is the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor. The name of the district comes from two rivers, the Lin river on the east side and the Tong river on the west side. The district is also headquarters of the 47th Group Army of the People’s Liberation Army, one of the two group armies that comprise the Lanzhou Military Region responsible for defending China’s northwest borders.
