Welcome to Gornji Milanovac, a charming town and municipality located in the Moravica District of central Serbia. With a population of 24,216, the town was founded in 1853 and was originally named Despotovica after the river passing by the town. However, in 1859, the name was changed to Gornji Milanovac at the request of the Prince of Serbia Miloš Obrenović. Its name means Upper Milanovac, as there is also a Lower Milanovac. The town has a rich history, with settlements dating back to prehistoric times, and has been significant in economic, agronomy, infrastructure, and military sense during the Middle Ages and the time of the Roman Empire. It was also significant during the First and Second Serbian Uprisings against Ottoman Empire rule. Today, Gornji Milanovac offers a variety of cultural monuments, institutions, music and folklore, tourism, ecology, and events. The first library in Gornji Milanovac was established in 1857 and is called Braća Nastasijević (English: Brothers Nastasijević). The main theater in this municipality is Milanovačko amatersko pozorište (Milanovac amateur theater).
