Welcome to Nawanshahr, a beautiful city located in the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district of Punjab, India. Founded by migrants from Rahon, Nawanshahr was previously a town that became a district in 1995. The city has a rich history and is known for its economic prosperity, strong transport links, and abundance of health facilities. Let’s explore what Nawanshahr has to offer.
One of the most interesting aspects of Nawanshahr’s history is its connection to the Ghorewaha clan, which was allied to King Akbar via kinship ties. Dewan Banna Mal Misr (Gautam), a member of the Gautam Brahmin (Shori Gotra) family of Nawanshahr, played a major role in settling disputes between Britishers and local Rajas during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. His descendants continue to live in Kapurthala, Phagwara, New Delhi, and Dehradun.
Nawanshahr was later developed and constructed by Lala Parmanand Bhuchar (Sareen), who was the first major scale building thekedar. Lala Paramanand was given a mould of large brick design by Queen Elizabeth in the presence of Maharaja Patiala in his courtroom, as a token of gratitude, to settle brick factories (Batha) in the city. He resided in Lalliyan Mohalla (Lalleyan da Mohalla) situated in the centre of the city. The mohalla has a haveli there along with a common haveli which was the residence of 100 families, a historical landmark in that mohalla made with Nanakshahi bricks.
Nawanshahr is known for its economic prosperity, with large numbers of families from the district settling abroad and sending remittances back to India. The district’s economy is also improving due to the currency coming from overseas Punjabi people. The city has a railroad connecting it with Jalandhar, Rahon, and Jaijon, and is well-connected by road to other parts of the state. Punjab Roadways serve a number of routes from Nawanshahr to other big cities nearby, such as Amritsar, Delhi, and Chandigarh.
Nawanshahr has an abundance of health facilities, with a high number of private clinics and nursing homes available, some of which claim to have the latest medical equipment. There is also an adequate number of government hospitals, dispensaries, and primary health centers in the area. For every village in the district, health services are available. Veterinary hospitals can be found in Nawanshahr, Rahon, Saroya, and Balachaur.
Nawanshahr is also home to several notable people, including Indian freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, Hindi and Punjabi actor Madan Puri, Indian-Canadian singer Jazzy B, singer Surinder Shinda, actor Amrish Puri, Bollywood producer Yash Chopra, singer-songwriter and producer Sukh-E Musical Doctorz, and singer Roshan Prince.
While Nawanshahr may not be as well-known as some of its neighboring cities, it is a hidden gem that is definitely worth a visit. With its rich history, economic prosperity, and abundance of health facilities, Nawanshahr is a destination that should be on every traveler’s bucket list.
